Hex TD definitely appears to be inspired by Vector TD. The graphics are very similar. The towers look and function basically the same as VTD. You are even given the same interest, boss levels and upgrade options.
Regardless, there are enough differences to satisfy me. I believe this is the first Java tower defense to gain popularity. I believe it is also the first TD to use a hex grid instead of the standard square grid. The game also has unique maps, interesting level/tower balance and an editor. (which I haven’t tried)
Overall, I think the game is mostly brilliant. Hopefully there aren’t any copyright issues.

Don’t worry about copyright issues, the game is open-source. So if miss a feature, or want to change something, you can change it! (or get someone else to do it for you;))

With the latest version I think HexTD is now the first TD game to feature recording and replaying of your game. And using with that, cheater-free top-scores
