I’m not sure if I would say the police have gone too far in this case. People need to realize they have a social responsibility on and offline. Crossing the line should result in consequences. Otherwise the line gets blurred and eventually fades away.

A student might go to jail for threats in an online match

The topic of mass school shootings isn’t new. There have been several incidents over the years, where students that were made fun of got their hands on weapons and killed everybody in their schools. Really sad and horrible stories.

While playing Call of Duty 4 online on Xbox Live, a 19 year old Frostburg State University student has threatened to shoot his in-game comrades in real life. This is pretty common in online games, hell, I even do it. It’s just fun, role-playing and such. Although some players get actually frustrated and start screaming in the mic really dirty stuff. And when you cut them up with a knife from the back while they’re doing that, it gets em even more frustrated. Fun fun.

But what do you think happened? The guys that were threatened actually called the cops and informed them of “the incident”. They were probably just making a joke, but the police took it waaay too seriously. They did a search of the potential killer’s room, said to have found no weapons — and now the whole thing is going to court! In the worst case, the student can get a year in jail and a $5k fine. Ouch.

The student has said he had no intentions of taking the threats outside of online space. Be careful what you say online.
