I accounted for 2 of the Nintendo DSs in November. They are really quite amazing as far as handhelds go. The phrase “they don’t make them like they used to” no longer applies when it comes to electronic devices. It all started with the ipod/tank imo.

Nintendo Sells Over 1 Million Consoles a week.

Wow. I guess despite being the lowest-rated company on the Greenpeace website, people didn’t really care during Black Friday — the 7 day Thanksgivings weekend from November 18-24 — as they sold over 1.03 Million consoles during that time. More than that — those aren’t even International sales, the 1.03 mil were sold only in the United States!

The ratio is dominated by the Nintendo DS (Dual-Screen) handheld console. 350,000 were $249 Wiis, and 653,000 were $129 DSes. This is officially the greatest week for a gaming company ever.

Unfortunately, this didn’t really help the hardware shortages. Nintendo president of America Reggie Fils-Aime admits, that many wanna-be-Wii-owners were left out in the cold as hardware shortages are a problem — even a year later after the consoles official launch.

And now it’s official - the Nintendo DS is the fastest selling console in history. By now it’s sold over 20.5 mill units, thus hitting the 20 million units sold mark in just 3 years — 3 years earlier than the previous record-holder, the Sony PlayStation 2.

After 2 not-so-successful generations, Nintendo has regained the crown, though most people buying the Nintendo consoles aren’t really gamers. It is an issue, as the Mario factory is pretty much leaving hardcore gamers out in the cold, having only games like Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 and Zelda Twilight Princess for the Wii — while other platforms have dozens of hardcore exclusives.

Nintendo will have even more non-hardcore non-gamers when Wii Fit comes out. Is this good or bad for gaming? You decide.
